The other day we were doing some risk analysis at work, the usual stuff that many companies and departments do – even more so it they are an IT department or rely heavily on IT.  It was the traditional brainstorming session, collecting threats and vulnerabilities and then assigning probabilities and impacts to them., but I [...]

Come on down
July 16th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Life, Work
It is going to be a (slightly) historic day on Monday. The tall chimney opposite County Oak in Crawley is coming down. Over the last couple of weeks we have enjoyed watching various mechanical monsters chewing up the factory building next to it, and now we are ready for the main event.

Bike parts
June 15th, 2009 · No Comments · Work
Today at work we had a local bike shop set up a stall at lunchtime, offering 15% staff discounts at their shop to try and tempt us out of our cars and into accident and emergency onto bicycles. All very worthy, and they do have an extensive catalogue. I would be interested to see how [...]
Economy measures
June 9th, 2009 · 7 Comments · Work
Like any other sensible company is doing in the current economic climate the one I work for is trying to spend less, starting with cutting out un-necessary expenditure – nothing that wouldn’t make sense even in happier times. Amongst the instructions we have been given was one to spend company money as if it was [...]

Homework
March 16th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Music, Work
A trip to visit somebody in head office this afternoon gave me a chance to catch up on some homework. It is a 30 to 45-minute drive each way and no chance of distractions – I do not have a company mobile phone and certainly no hands-free kit so no chance of phone calls. It [...]
A bad day?
March 10th, 2009 · No Comments · Work
A fair definition of a bad day would be realising that it is eleven hours since you arrived at work and you are still there. That sort of sums up today, but it didn’t feel bad – probably a combination of having done a bit of work I was proud of and a colleague bringing [...]

Something for nothing
March 9th, 2009 · No Comments · Life, Work
There might be a catch but I haven’t found it yet: just a few limitations.  Today there was a stall at work manned by people from something called Easit. They gave us photocards that we can use to get 20% discounts on rail travel.
