Shaun of the Dead

September 7th, 2004 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

I bought the DVD of Shaun of the Dead on the way home today. I love zombie films, and also really liked the TV show Spaced so as this is a Zombie comedy made by the people responsible for Spaced I thought I couldn’t go wrong. And I was right, its a smashing film.

Jayne behaved exactly as I expected and exactly how I told her she would: her first reaction was to say ‘why do you always get films you want to see? why not get something I will like?’ and then she sat down and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Its a brilliant film for fans of recent British TV comedy. There are 5 people from Spaced in it (Tyres, the cycle courier, is a crowd-scene zombie), 2 from Black Books (not counting the two from Spaced who cropped up in it), 2 from The Office, 1 from League of Gentlemen and Matt Lucas. Admittedly some are only in the briefest of cameo roles, but never mind, there are a few other ‘names’ who appear only in voiceovers or as themselves on the TV.

Not only is the film funny and as stuffed with references to other films as Spaced was (didn’t spot a Star Wars reference though) but the disc is stuffed with extras. I have already watched all the short bits, but have four full-length commentary tracks to look forward to. The use of the surround speakers is pretty damned good too.
