New housing developments

September 3rd, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

I think I have already expressed a view or two on all these new new housing developments which keep springing up everywhere, and how they are nearly all identical brick and tile boxes straight out of Barratt’s catalogue of designs. I may also have gone on at boring length about the twee rustic names given to these estates and apartment blocks.

Where do they get these names from?

My guess is that they have something like this, but with a few more options. How it works is that you take any word from column A then any word from column B and you have the perfect name for a mass-produced anonymous housing estate.

kestrel
meridien
riverside
spinners
oakland
parkside
chestnut
heron
fallow
highwood
martingale
kingsmead
saxon
church
greenside
weavers
greenleas
sixpenny
briars
badgers
maypole
monks
castle
michaelmas
barley
scholars
knights
tudor
canal
cedar
court
grange
point
chase
heights
wharf
chime
farm
reach
meadow
fold
village
acres
coppice
fields
aspect
croft
view
valley
mount
mead
hollow
down
manor
dell
ridings
cloisters
gardens
keep
grove

Thats 900 faux-rustic names to keep all the developers going for a few months. At a pinch take any word from either column and put “The” in front of it and an “s” on the end if there is not one there already.

Extra points for using a name like ‘Chestnut Coppice’ for an inner-city development.
