Sky News was showing an American news programme which reported today’s events in Parliament as “Britain has decided to get tough on terrorism by increasing the time suspects can be held to 28 days“. It continued, with much less emphasis, to say how Tony Blair had hoped to increase it even further but was defeated.
With all the fuss about TB’s ‘humiliating defeat’ in the British news bulletins, and in tomorrow’s newspapers no doubt, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that we have doubled the length of time a suspect can be held without being charged, something which only gets mentioned as an afterthought in our news.
