Unlike Antonia, I was shocked to read this piece in the Guardian today. I imagine she had already heard about the UK Life League and their tactics for terrorising schools and clinics, but up until this morning I thought this sort of thing only happened in America.
On the way home this evening I came across this passage from Bertrand Russell, first published in 1930: (and thanks to Neil and Andrew for pointing me in the direction of this book)
There is no rational ground of any sort or kind for keeping a child ignorant of anything that he may wish to know, whether on sex or on any other matter. And we shall never get a sane population until this fact is recognised in early education, which is impossible so long as the churches are able to control educational politics.
