I could not resist the DVD of Rush in Rio. Asda were selling it for £7.97 which struck me as a good price.
Rush is a band which totally passed me by and I know nothing about them, except that several people have told me about what a good drummer they have. I did pick up a greatest hits CD a while ago and put it on the iRiver, but couldn’t really get into it. I felt like I was arriving at a party far too late.
I figured that seeing them play a concert would give me a better idea of what they are like, and I have to say I am impressed. Its playing in the background now and sounds in places like a more heavy metal version of Yes, and amazing that a trio can sound so full.
I did stop to watch the drum solo and agree that Neil Peart is a fine drummer, but I think I would rate Alan White and Prairie Prince higher. I was more taken with the bass playing. Its so rare to see someone actually playing the bass as a guitar and playing tunes on it.
I still find it hard to appreciate the band properly – I like them but don’t identify with them – but I am now at the stage where I really wish I had heard them in the 70s and bought a few of their albums when they came out.
