Seinfeld

March 5th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 8 Comments · Life

For the last few weeks we have been watching a couple of episodes of Seinfeld most days. On Friday we finally got to the end of the series 1,2 & 3 boxset, and now I’m starting to miss my daily dose of Seinfeld. Time to get series 4 I think. Something to look forward to as the show really got going in the fourth series.
On the positive side it means we can start watching Teachers series 4 which I got at Christmas. We watched a couple of episodes yesterday and had really forgotten how good it was.

I don’t know why it is, but even with a programme I absolutely love, I ration myself to no more than 2 or 3 episodes at a time. I know people who will happily watch an entire series of something, or all the Star Wars or Lord of the Rings films in one sitting but thats just not me.

Depends if I’m working (eg end of the day) or off ill. The former is definitely a maximum of three; the latter I can do a whole day with square eyes…!

I’m with you. Two’s normally my limit. I know somebody who watched series 1-5 of West Wing in the space of about three weeks, and I find that completely bizarre.

I think there’s much to be said for the anticipation being part of the enjoyment. It’s kinda like the old magician’s adage about leaving the audience wanting more…If I over-indulge in shows I love I think they lose their sparkle, somehow.

Gah, I’m breaking my late-night commenting rule. This’ll make no sense in the morning.

No no no – that’s the whole point of buying stuff on DVD — so you can watch them back-to-back…

Yes, I have watched all three (extended) LOTR films in one sitting. Plus the special features. Yes, I have watched the three original Star Wars films in a row. I’ve lost count of the number of West Wing / Buffy episodes I’ve watched in one go.

    And I learnt these things:

    1) It’s possible to sit on the sofa and put off going to the toilet for a lot longer than you’d imagine.

    2) Watch episodes week by week and you forget stuff. Watch them back-to-back and you pick up on all the little in-jokes and running themes. Especially TWW.

    3) There is a real world out there. Spend all day Sunday watching The West Wing and you’ll have a real shock when you see Dubya on the news from the White House…

I was picking up more of the running jokes in Seinfeld, but that more through watching them in the right order instead of as and when they get repeated on TV.

I know I’m getting on a bit, but I can still remember details of something I watched the day before!

I know all about 1) though, having once managed to travel to the airport, check in, fly to the US and get to the hotel between toilet visits.

On a really good package, just going through all the extra features turns watching one film into a marathon session.

Have you tried Curb Your Enthusiasm? That is just comic genius, I’ve series 1-3 and coudl watch it over and over!

I saw a bit of it once and it didn’t grab me. Then I saw the first episode from the beginning and thought it was great. (You know the one – “Remember your promise?”)

Definitely one to buy rather than chase around the schedules. I was put off for a while by the steep price but its now available for little more than a tenner a series so I’ll be into that once I finish with Seinfeld.

Yeah I thought the first episode from the first series was just genius. The third series is good too, I especially loved the Club Soda and Salt episode and the 3rd series finale.

I know what you mean about the prices – the prices of some DVD box sets are way out of proportion. I got mine for 10.99 and I think that’s the way it should be. Nearly all these series were made for TV, therefore I would have thought that, given the cost of production must be pretty low for a DVD it is nearly all profit for all involved so £24.99, is beyond for just 10 episodes!

You put your finger right on it there James.

The Curb Your Enthusiasm DVDs for series one looked like poor value for money at over twenty quid for about 6 hours of TV.
