Vince Welnick

Sad to see that Vince Welnick has died at the age of 55.

Most of the obituaries refer to him as the keyboard player with the Grateful Dead. I have to admit that I didn’t know he was played with them: for me he was always one of the core members of The Tubes, sadly missing from the line-up when I saw them a few years ago, and now missing for good.

Maybe The Tubes are not a major part of wider cultural history, but they hold a place dear in my own cultural history after I played one of their LPs almost to death at school and then saw them play at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1979. If it had not been for Fee Waybill breaking his neck on the previous tour, they would have been the first band I ever saw live. In the end I went to see Yes before The Tubes toured the UK again, but I still have fond memories of the band.
