Our very own sex offender

August 13th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

This week’s Crawley News had a story about a sex offender going to court because he failed to notify them when he changed address, so that although he was on the various sex offenders’ registers the police did not know where he was.

They should have asked us, because we knew. He was doing our bathroom for us!

To say that we were a bit surprised to see his face and name in the paper would be an understatement… I think its safe to say that we would not have been leaving him in the house with our daughter if we had known. It turns out that his girlfriend didn’t know about the past convictions and neither did the friends who recommended him. He seemed like a nice bloke too, not conforming to any of the stereotypes.

If you can get a contractor in through personal recommendations by people who know him and his family and who seems perfectly normal and they can still turn out to be on the child sex offenders register you have to wonder if we are reaching the point where you have to ask for criminal records checks for any bit of maintenance work.

The court case was on the day he finished the work. No wonder he turned up late that day, and it does explain why he seemed a bit distracted during the work.
