I must be in some strange parallel universe or something. At the end of the first day of the first day of the new (Premier league) season West Ham have more points than all the other London clubs put together, and if the two Manchester teams can manage to win tomorrow it will stay that […]

Today Jayne went down to Folkstone where the Sussex Army Cadets had a parade to be presented with a new banner, the old one being retired after 40 years of service. It gave her a chance to see Chrystal who has been down there for two weeks on annual camp. This was a big deal […]

Pay and display

There used to be a saying about people who would not pay for shareware (back in ancient times when the honour system was in place, before shareware had expiry times on it) it went something like “If you can afford a computer you can afford to pay for software”. True it was a saying most […]

Why is it that when the cat purrs, the Mrs thinks it is cute, but when I purr in my sleep she calls it snoring? Bah!

John Paschoud will appreciate this…. I had hoped to link to this story which a co-worker brought to my attention for some amusement, but it seems to have disappeared from the vnunet site. It is still in their list of news, and appears if you search for "IT managers" but the article itself has vanished. […]

A couple of weeks ago I had a slight mishap with my trusty old iRiver. While it was in my overnight bag en route to Doncaster it got bumped and the clip broke off of the remote control. This might sound trivial, but it was so convenient to leave the MP3 player in an inside […]
Child poverty in Crawley

The other day Antonia wrote about some statistics released by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, with particular emphasis (obviously) on how they apply to Oxford. Just as obviously I could not resist looking them up to see how the JRF think we are doing in Crawley. It is worth mentioning something first about how the figures […]

High visibility gathering

I have no idea what this is all about. I took a stroll over to the Jubilee Gardens at lunchtime and saw this enormous crowd of workmen, from dozens of different companies. It doesn’t look like they are just taking lunch, but I haven’t a clue what they are all doing there otherwise.
Disaster Strikes

Five days before the start of the football season and our star striker goes and breaks an ankle while training for tomorrow’s England friendly! Still, looking on the bright side, that still leaves us with more strikers than Sven took with him to Germany.
