Seeing a comment in a reader’s review of Richard Dawkins’ new book, The God Delusion, over at Amazon made me think…
Wouldn’t it be cool if some organisation, a sort of anti-Gideons, went round placing copies in hotel rooms. Or copies of Bertrand Russell.
Only a tenner at Amazon. I am tempted, despite feeling a bit wary of Dawkins’ approach to the subject – he is a bit extreme in his anti-religion, whereas I am more quietly atheistic. The atheist equivalent of CofE to Dawkins’ atheist equivalent of Opus Dei, if you like 🙂

I think the anti-gideons have already struck. The last two hotels I stayed in (cheap & cheerful in Bloomsbury; Victorian mock-medieval grandeur in Dublin) had no Gideon bibles at all. We turned the rooms up-side-down looking for them as well…..

Why were you looking for a Gideons bible anyway? Don’t tell me you lost the one which they gave you at school!
Don’t worry – I lost mine too, although I still have the one I won in 1968 in a competition.
