Girls Aloud call for hypothecated tax

Reading the article about Girls Aloud's New Statesman interview certainly brightened up my bus journey today.

On the face of it there is no reason why they should not hold political opinions and want to state them and it hasn't stopped other entertainers like Billy Bragg.  No doubt there will be those who sneer at the sheer presumptuousness of them daring to have a point of view, but they have just as much right as any blogger out there.  We can't deplore the lack of political debate in the country and then assume there is some sort of qualificatin for taking part.

I don't agree with the justification of bringing back grammar schools ("Then you can say to low-acheivers: you can get there if you work hard.") but its a starting point for a debate and I would love to sit down with Cheryl and really thrash it out – but I don't think the Mrs. would be too keen.

We are all guilty of underestimating artists or musicians, and being impressed when they do something totally natural like having a point of view.  Its like when a politician does something like riding a bicycle or holding a hammer and its news.  I know we all took the piss out of Adam Ricketts being on the Tory A list – but why shouldn't he?

I would hate to see a parliament full of musicians and actors, but can't see the harm of having a few in there to add variety anddiversity – better than having the place totally full of lawyers.

Still…  I'm looking forward to future articles concerning Justin Hawins from the Darkness explaining our relationship with Europe, Andy Bell from Erasure discussing the pros and cons of an independent nuclear deterrent and the Cheeky Girls outlining new policies for  judicial processes with a view to reducing the prison population.

Anyway, I did like the bit at the end where Cheryl gave her verdict on footballers' wives being as bad as benefit spongers – just a higher class of sponger.  Cheryl is, of course, married to Arsenal's Ashley Cole so would know all about it.  She made her mark before marrying a footballer, like Louise Redknapp or Victoria Beckham did, but you do have to wonder how well those comments will be received by some of the other WAGs.
