News Values

January 6th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Politics · No Comments · Life, Politics

This week the Crawley Observer published the second half of their review of 2006. I already mentioned how part one (Jan-June) had totally missed the Tories taking control of Crawley council in May for the first time in about 30 years, but this week they have topped that.

In December the Tories lost their majority on the council when one of their councillors defected to the Liberal Democrats, leaving the council with minority control for the first time. The Observer have decided that was not noteworthy, certainly not as unexpected as “schools around Crawley and Horley put on nativity plays”

And that is why I never went into journalism – my idea of news values is completely out of line with the professionals.

On the other hand… describing council leader Bob Lanzer as “Crawley’s answer to Orlando Bloom” made me laugh. And then made me wonder what the question could have been. Suggestions?
