Hogarth, Marlow, Hislop, Gilbert & George

How does he do it? Sometimes time just drags and after several hours you look at the clock to see that only minutes have passed, but with Tim Marlow he does a programme about an exhibition and at the end you think it can’t be over yet, thats only 15 minutes and find that 45 minutes have just flown by.

Tonight he was looking around the Hogarth exhibition at Tate Britain with Ian Hislop. It was an enjoyable and informative programme but for some reason Hogarth just doesn’t do it for me. I like the paintings and the engravings but they don’t excite me. But thats the subjectivity of art isn’t it?

I would still go to see the exhibition (as long as it was less crowded than the Velazquez one) but I don’t think I could say the same about the other big show on at the moment – Gilbert & George at Tate Modern. Perhaps I should go? Perhaps seeing the works at full scale would change my opinions, but at the moment it just seems to me they have been doing the same painting over and over for 30 years, and it owes more to craft than to art. They seem to have settled on a formula ages ago and now repeat it ad nauseum.

Or maybe I just need Tim Marlow to explain it to me.
