Open source frustration

February 18th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Technology · No Comments · Technology

So far I have found that OpenOffice (the open source alternative to Microsoft Office) is very easy to use for most basic purposes.

It is fine for opening existing documents or spreadsheets and editing them, or printing them.

It is also fine for creating new straightforward documents and spreadsheets.

The trouble starts with anything a little obscure, where everything is possible but done differently to how it is in MS Office.  Not the fault of the software, but really my fault for havnig spent so many years getting used to how Word and Excel do everything.

Latest frustration is trying to use mail merge to create a load of labels from a database of addresses.  It worked in the end, but this was the very annoying first attempt.
