Not so greasy spoon

Any regular readers will know that two things I really like are bargains and fried breakfasts, so I was absolutely chuffed to find the two combined on Friday.

After I finished work I decided to have a look at the B&B/Cafe on London Road, roughly opposite Manor Royal. It has been there for some time but seems to have had a bit of a facelift recently and now goes by the name “Basils”

Inside it was neat, clean and non-smoking, so I took myself and my fags out to the tables in a tidy and pleasant back garden. It is only open from 0700 to 1400 and basically does breakfasts and rolls/sandwiches. There are several set breakfast options but I decided to ask for my favourite breakfast – bacon, egg and tomatoes, with toast and tea and that turned out to be exactly two pounds.

Two pounds! It would have cost me nearer to four pounds in the cafes of London, or even in Crawley town centre. The set menu options looked like being just as good value, but I try not to get too carried away. When it turned up it even had decent bread with a bit of a crust to it and not just bland sliced loaf-type bread.

After sitting out in the garden enjoying the cholesterol in the sunshine, reading my newspaper in a leisurely fashion, I walked into the Town Centre to try and burn a few of those calories off. I think I might be finding myself at Basils on quite a few Friday lunchtimes.

Some work colleagues tell me that this cafe was even better before it was re-launched. I can only take their word for it, but even if they are right it is still bloody good.
