After loading the latest security update patch thing to Windows I now get an error message whenever I fire up the computer. The error message says:
The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.
A bit wordy, but the gist is that Microsoft are saying that they have everything planned for Windows with places reserved for vital system files and some other oafish supplier is wrecking everything by allocating the same places for their grotty programs.
(I think we can all see where this is heading can’t we?)
So I Googled HHCTRL.OCX and found that, according to processlibrary.com…
hhctrl.ocx is a Microsoft ActiveX which supports all functions of the user help interface.
I guess that makes the vendor of the control which is screwing up Microsoft’s operating system, er, Microsoft. Anyone surprised by that? No I didn’t think so.
Hang on though. Maybe I read it wrong and the .ocx is the valid one and the .dll is the foreign object? Just in case, I looked at dllinformation.com and find that user32.dll is a…
Windows User API Client DLL
And to double-check I looked at the properties of the file and it says its copyright Microsoft Corporation.
It all reminds me a bit of a previous employer, where every crisis they ever encountered was caused by the solution to the previous crisis. Maybe the next Windows Update will fix it?

“And you’re not using a Mac because….”
perhaps skuds is ‘old’ Labour?
You know the type – still living in the last century…
Skuds // Apr 5, 2007 at 9:57 pm
Mainly because:
1. They cost a lot more than this PC cost me
2. I had 20Gb + of music in WMA format
3. I have a pile of PC games
4. All the other computers in the house are windows, so I can swap cards and stuff between them.
5. I’ll stick with what I know
Having said that… I have toyed with the idea of installing Linux as a dual boot.

Macs are pretty much Intel PCs with a new but also proprietry OS. Except that they cost more, but media twats love them.
I’m with Charlie Brooker all the way on Macs.

Oh dear… Charlotte really knows how to stir things up, even though she is not yet 2.
Arguments about politics, taxation, religion, racism and football are nothing compared to the holy wars of Mac v Windows. Not sure I want to go there really.
Even worse than iPods vs iRiver!

The only comment more irritating than “Well, I use a Mac!” is the one that regularly appears on tech support forums, to wit:
“Get a proper [operating system|ISP|Sound Card|AV|Firewall]”
The “proper” one usually, coincidentally, being the one the current poster has.
Twats.
Oh, while I’m on a roll, the number 2 irritant on tech support forums, is you see a post from someone who has the same problem you have been wrestling with for ages. you see it has 1 reply, 6 months ago. Eagerly, you open the reply to see what solution is offered by the knowledgable responder. Instead you read the dreaded words:
“i too ave got this problm can u hlp plz”

This seems like it’s worth a try:

Rob – I know exactly what you mean. The only thing possibly more annoying than that is ‘log in to see the solution’.
Bob Piper // Apr 6, 2007 at 9:03 am
Skuds, this must be a problem relating to windows automatic updates because, in Rob’s immortal words…. “i too ave got this problm can u hlp plzâ€Â.
I’ll try the microsoft support bit.
Skuds // Apr 6, 2007 at 10:19 am
That link of Andrew’s has done the trick here. No more error message.

Well I have two machines: my junk machine (Windows) and my work machine (Mac)
The Mac is my work machine because it is more reliable than Crappy McCrappy Windows.
Yes, it costs more and it dishes out waaaaay less aggro than Crappy.
Many of those people who choose to scorn OSX and the general easy usability of Macs haven’t really had much contact with them in the first place. Yes they are more expensive but if you don’t want to go prematurely gray because your Windows machine decided to capsize under the heavy weight of all the anti-virus software you have to run at 3am, in the end the cost justifies the means.
Hey, I’m not quite 2 and I can afford one!
P.S. Danivon, my me my dear!
Charlotte // Apr 7, 2007 at 7:49 am
The P.S. was supposed to say “bite me”. Was it a typo or is Skuds using a language filter?
Let’s experiment….
Skuds // Apr 7, 2007 at 10:16 am
There is no language filter I am aware of, and if there was it would not filter out phrases like ‘bite me’ which are both tame and capable of being used in a totally innocent way.
I do filter out the names of several types of medicine (V*agra, ph*nterm*ne, etc.) because 90% of spam uses them) but that just consigns comments to a black hole. Also a couple of choice words send comments into the moderation queue, but there is nothing which replaces words.
(I had forgotten about that old spam word filter)

Anyone know how to fix it? Get rid of the message.
Skuds // Apr 10, 2007 at 5:55 pm
The link in comment 7 fixed it for me!
