I downloaded the new Björk album this evening. Its a bit early to know what to make of all of it – it might take a few listens, but it sounds a lot more accessible than her last few offerings. The first track Earth Intruders is a great even on a single hearing: lots of percussion, which I am a sucker for. Innocence is a sparky, jerky song which is also accessible on a single hearing and Hope has some African-style drum patterns and kora playing.
The rest could well be avant garde for the sake of it, but it might grow on me over time. Antony Hegarty is on a couple of the tracks and I’m still not sure what I make of him. It only works out at £2.25 on eMusic, so worth taking a risk on it.
I think I did well with my 40 tracks from eMusic this month, getting complete albums from Angelique Kidjo, Tony Allen (4 long tracks) and Björk. Even if I only end up really liking 3 or 4 of the Björk tracks its not a bad haul. I did notice that most of her back catalogue is available – I might go through that next month, but a bit more selectively.
