Excellent news! A new Robert Rankin book is imminent. It is called the Da-da-de-da-da Code and is, presumably, a piss-take of the Da Vinci Code.
And on that bombshell the readership neatly divides into those who haven’t a clue who Robert Rankin is and those who are already off to place an advance order…

Just bought ‘The Brightonomicon’, which looks like fun.

I’ve tried Robert Rankin – one about a time traveller and a guy in the future who restores paintings at the British Museum – but just couldn’t be arsed. Then again, anything which takes the piss out of the words book ever should really be given a second chance.

I’m not sure why I have never given Rankin a try. I’ll have to give him a go

I meant to say “worst” rather than “words” which makes my writing skills as good as Dan Brown!

RR is a bit of an acquired taste, but worth acquiring IMHO. It is probably possible to enjoy the later books without having read the earlier ones but there are so many running jokes, passing references to incidents in earlier books, guest appearances from characters and so on which add an extra dimension for the regular reader.
Even certain turns of phrase which crop up like old friends. The first time the words ‘stout stick’ or ‘its a tradition or an old charter or something’ appear on the page its like seeing the Bottom live show when the cricket bat makes an appearance.
I wouldn’t put anyone off reading the later books at all, but I still think that the Brentford Trilogy is the best place to start – an possibly the most enjoyable too.
