Normally I am very cynical about displays of mass sentimentality and mawkishness, but I thought the events before tonight’s Liverpool game were genuinely touching, with the Kop putting the city above traditional rivalries. I really think that Liverpool supporters are just about the best in the country – apart from the massed eastenders and Essex boys of West Ham obviously.
We now wait on tenterhooks to see if Boris Johnson is going to make any comments on the whole thing… it must be a super-human effort for him to avoid any mention of wallowing in victim status.
As for the game itself, Liverpool looked very comfortable. Benayoun showed why we were so upset to lose him, and every time Mascherano was involved I had to wonder why Pardew and Curbishley were so reluctant to give him a game.
