I only found out about Angelique Kidjo's concert last week quite late. Probably too late to get a ticket, so I didn't try. Having seen her play a couple of times already (plus once as a guest with Santana) it didn;t seem too vital.
Now I have read Robin Denselow's review of the evening I am kicking myself. He was a little scathing of Kidjo's set – but as described it sounds very much like when I saw her before, and I really enjoyed that. What got Robin's juices flowing was the support act, Mayra Andrade from Cape Verde. Just reading the description I couldn't wait to hear what what all the fuss was about and so this evening I downloaded the album Navega.
I'm pretty sure I have never heard Cape Verde music before but now I know that it was my loss. This album is beautiful, charming and extremely musical. It is so much more than run-of-the-mill Brazilian-style music. If Ms Andrade does not crop up on the Radio 3 world music awards, Later with Jools Holland, and so on it will be a crime.
