I read somewhere yesterday that Socrates was a trained sculptor. I can’t remember exactly where I read it or what the context was, but its just the sort of odd thing I enjoy discovering.

I love that feeling of serendipitu you get. I got it when I found out that the Tradewinds do not have a commercial meaning. It comes from the word trade meaning path… Live and learn even in one’s mid 40s!

My favourite fact this week is that if every one of the UKs 10 million office workers used one less staple a week they would save 120 tonnes of steel in a year. Very laudable and I am always concerned about waste & recycling but sometimes I think that I’m glad somebody else digs out these facts so I can have a life….(although I am using this fact in a Learning at Work Week session I am doing tomorrow afternoon in a half-day off work so maybe I don’t have a life?!)

I found out today that Charles Babbage invented the cow-catcher (the wedge-shaped grille on the front of trains).

Now that *is* random.
The trouble with the staple fact is that lots of office workers now do not use staples at all. I doubt if I use more than one a week on average.
A better fact is that if all the reams of Niceday paper used by office workers in the UK to elevate their PC monitors were placed in a pile it would be three times the height of the Empire State Building.
A fact only slightly spoiled by the fact that I made it up.

Working in an office is not quite the same as being an office worker. How about my new fact – batteries use 50 times more energy to produce than they supply….

Whether its true or not thats a good one.

Even better, there is a website called http://www.batteryuniversity.com which helps you get the most out of any batteries you really need to use (mobile, laptops etc). I never knew research was so much fun…
