Arabian Knights

What an eventful day the last day of the transfer window was in the end.  As usual a lot of the action and most of the speculation concerned Tottenham in one way or another but it was Manchester City who grabbed the headlines, first for being taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group, then for being tipped to divert Berbatov from United to City and finally for outbidding Abramovich and snatching Robinho.  They had also talked about getting David Villa.

The new owners have set their sights very high: a top four finish this year and winners of the league next year, but is that possible?  Roman Abramovich has shown that you can, in effect, buy a title but that only works when there is only one club with bottomless pockets who can guarantee that they can outbid everyone else to get their first choice of players – but even then the success was not sustained.  Once two or more clubs have those sorts of funds available there are no guarantees at all.
