Misty Mountain Hop

October 13th, 2008 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

It was a misty one this morning.  Normally I like the way everything looks in the fog – but not when I have to drive 100 miles.  We seem to get a lot of fog around here (which makes you wonder who picked it as the location for a major airport) but today it was still foggy when we were on the A1(M) heading towards Letchworth.

The traffic was not too badly affected though.  There were a lot of cars and a lot of groups of motorbikes, but all moving at a decent speed in our direction as we passed the enormous tailbacks going the other way.  Fliers werenot so lucky.  There was somebody on the radio who had her flight from Gatwick diverted to Birmingham and was on a coach up there to start her holiday.   After the fog burnt off it was a gloriously sunny day up in Hertfordshire.

Me and Charlie went up there to meet up with a sister and the step-sisters to clear out Dad’s house before it finally gets sold.  I thought there were only a few things to sort out, but those things included a bed, a sofa and the contents of the loft.  Fortunately Charlie is a seasoned loft-monkey so we sent him up there.

Me and the brother-in-law made a first trip to the local tip and it was a nightmare.  It is all done for the best possible reasons, but the staff there are very strict. If you have a cardboard box full of assorted junk they will not let you lob it in the compactor: they want you to tip it in and keep the box so that can go in the cardboard skip – but to sort out anything metal and put that in the right place too.

It is only what we should be doing, and we should be sorting it all out at home before taking it down there – although that is easier to do when it is your own rubbish – but I have never seen that sort of seal for the job before.  Certainly the staff at the Crawley tip would tell you where stuff should go if you asked but I have never seen them so proactive.

The last job for the day was to scatter Dad’s ashes which took longer than I expected.  And I think I may have inadvertantly inhaled a bit in the process, but I am trying not to think about that.  Its good that it is done though: he has been dead a year and now that we have found a home for the remains and the house is getting sold (bar any last-minute shenanigans from the buyer) we can finally move on.
