Today I took the plunge and bought the sort of camera I have been after for years – a Canon EOS 1000D. I was tempted by the 450D, or even a Sony, and plagued Andrew at Wongablog with questions about cameras for a week or two – then bored family and work colleagues with camera-related chatter for a while.
Fridays are half days where I work and I had been aiming to go shopping today, which is also pay-day, getting more and more impatient and obsessed as the week went on. I have wanted a digital SLR for years now but every time I thought I could afford one or spare the money for one something in the house would break down and need replacing. Either that or somebody else in the house needed or wanted something.
The real frustration was coming home and not being able to try the thing out until the battery was charged. I put it on charge straight away and then spent the longest couple of hours of my life waiting for the light on the charger to change colour while I swapped lenses and contemplaed reading the manual while I waited.
Darkness had fallen before it was all ready, which was a bit of a drag because I will not be getting the flashgun until next week. However the first photo (of the kitten, naturally) came out OK with the built-in flash and in full automatic mode.
Now I can’t wait until the week after next: I have a few days off work to use up my last bit of holiday and then I’m off to Paris/Versailles for a union-related meeting and then Calais a couple of days later for a day trip. Loads of opportunities to try out the new toys.
But the big question is this:Â if Chrystal dislikes my cat as much as she says, how come I always find him in her room?

Good luck with your photography Skuds – I’ll look forward to seeing stuff on your flickr site soon!
I’ve been really poor at taking telescopic photos recently – partly because there hasn’t been a clear night yet when I’ve not been doing something else that evening!

Great choice of camera SkudsI’ve not regretted the money I spent on getting my hands on a Nikon D200. Have fun and happy shooting!

Too wet to go out today. I didn’t much fancy taking the camera out in the pouring rain today…
I am hoping it is better tomorrow when the old bangers pass through Crawley.
