I looked at the call registers on my mobile phone today, leading to two questions:
- Why have I got a mobile phone?
- What does everyone else find to talk about?
The sad fact is that my call registers showed that, so far in 2009, I have made three calls and received two. One of the outward calls was not answered and one of the incoming was Chas calling me after getting the missed call, so a total of four conversations in the first 15 days of the year…
I have probably sent and received a lot more texts though. Is there a market for a text-only mobile phone, or a text and email/internet-only device? Must be if my Blackberry experience is anything to go by: I was quite happy using it only for text and email and never regretted the un-enabled phone option.
It is not a freak circumstance either. I don’t like talking on the phone, especially on a mobile phone in a public place. (would that more people were the same!)  Are there others like me though? When techno-pundits go wild about the latest way to use a computer and Internet connection to do free phone calls, how many people have devices ostensibly for phone calls (often free within limits) but use every function except talk?
I certainly feel justified in not having a contract phone: pay-as-you-go top-ups last me ages. The ironic thing is that I pay for texts but most of my phone calls are free: thanks to an option on Jayne’s phone contract I can call her, Chrystal or Frankie for nothing. Not sure why I persist in using texts to them.
Or maybe its just a sign that I need more friends…
