Car tax

July 30th, 2012 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

I renewed the car tax tonight. It is all very easy to do it online, but wouldn’t it be easier if you could do it on a monthly direct debit? It must be just about the last major bill that you can’t pay on some sort of installment basis. I know it is an annual (or six-monthly) disc, but the TV licence is annual and can still be paid monthly.

With the TV licence and car insurance you seem to pay a small premium for paying in installments so it actually ends up costing more, but you avoid having to suddenly find over £200 in one month, which can be a problem for some people, especially if it coincides with a long month or christmas or something.

More importantly, it saves you having to remember to pay, or to get round to it. I have had teh car tax reminder for a month and keep meaning to do it ‘tomorrow’ and eventually got round to it at the last minute. I remember when most bill arrived in the post and would be paid by sending a cheque back, or by going into a bank. I was forever getting red bills more through procrastination or mislaying bills than through skintness. Now everything is on direct debits and, in theory, I don’t need to remember anything. Except the bloody car tax.
