This is the sound of our neighbours at 00:30… You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video I’m just wondering whether I am being a miserable old misanthrope for getting annoyed by the sound of people enjoying themselves or if they are being unreasonable? Or are both true? Fortunately this is […]

Working from home
August 30th, 2013 · 2 Comments · Life, Work
I think I will be the only person in my department who is not working from home tomorrow. I think I will do my bit for team solidarity and integrating properly with my colleagues by turning up at the office in my pyjamas so I can work the same way as everybody else.

Today’s bright idea: an ironic app

I may be throwing stones around a glass house a bit here since I use them myself, but I am finding it more and more difficult to cope with Captchas. I find myself wondering whether that “c” should be upper- or lower-case, whether that other squiggle is a “z” a “2” or just some random […]

I have got a little bit hooked on the TV quiz show Pointless. That might be a bit of an understatement though.

Todays’ bright idea: a new open source file format for CVs. In the old days a CVwas typed up on paper and physically posted. Now they are done in (usually) MS Word and more often emailed or uploaded to an employer or agency’s web site, but people still think of the CV as a document […]

Today’s bright idea #1

Sometimes I have ideas. I never do anything with them. In many cases this is probably just as well – I am thinking here of the Zimmer frame/pogo stick hybrid that would never have got funding from the Dragon’s Den. Other ideas get ridiculed by everyone who hears them but years later I find that […]

August 20th, 2013 · Comments Off on Slim pickings in Gosport · Life
On Sunday we went down to Gosport to visit Chrystal. Readers of this blog who don’t follow me on Twitter or Facebook might be unaware that Chrystal moved down there recently, having done two amazing things. Firstly she got a 2:2 for her computer science degree and secondly (and arguably more difficult at the moment) […]

Vote me!

This year I decided to put in nomination papers for the local council elections. For various reasons I have been quite absent from politics for a couple of years, but I’m feeling a lot more up for it now. When I got selected for the Horsham parliamentary elections I concentrated on that constituency, although did […]

40,000 and counting
August 13th, 2013 · Comments Off on 40,000 and counting · Music, Technology
Tonight I reached the arbitrary but round number of 40,000 tracks scrobbeld to Last.fm. A lot was from Spotify, but I guess a fair chunk was from Windows Media Player too. To celebrate, I made sure that track 40,000 was Green Onions, which is my most-played track. Looking at the statistics on Last.fm is is […]

All caught up?
August 12th, 2013 · Comments Off on All caught up? · Technology
Despite working in technology companies for most of my career I am hardly ever an early adopter of any new technologies. I was very late in getting a CD player , still buying vinyl years after CDs came along. I was also late getting a DVD, and have still never had a DVD recorder. Originally […]
