Music to see you off

March 4th, 2019 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Music · No Comments · Life, Music

I have been to a couple of funerals in the last couple of weeks. Both very different. One was a biker’s funeral where the music at the service featured early Cliff Richard and Johnny Cash. The other was a Roman Catholic service with lots of hymns and some Irish music, but right at the end Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, which was nice.

It seems to be quite common now for people to specify what songs they want played, and I can see the appeal. One last chance to inflict your musical tastes on all your friends and family. I would be very tmpted to request Burn by Deep Purple or the Cooke and Moore version of Goodbyee that they used to do at the end of Not Only But Also…

…or just pick songs that sound great. Green Onions or Midlife Crisis by Faith No More.

Its all moot for me really. Jayne and I decided a while ago that we would not have a funeral but will go for direct cremation instead. A shame in a way because it would be fantastic to think of Crowded House playing Don’t Dream Its Over while the coffin heads for the oven, though I think that would not be fair on everybody. I find myself welling up whenever I hear that song under any circumstances, especially the bit where the organ kicks in.
