Blue Sky Thinking

I have finally reached the point where I am taking steps to ditch Twitter/X. The only reason I lasted so long is that I like to avoid too much admin in my life, and if I want to move to another network rather than just unplug completely it seems like a lot of admin.

A lot of this is to do with all the pissing around that Musk did; the blue ticks, the API changes, the letting Nazis back, and the adverts. So many adverts now. Do I ever need to see another ad for Temu? I would like to say that me bailing is for moral and ethical reasons, but I reckon the bloody adverts are a large part of it.

The first step was really to decide which platform to move to. Facebook is out. I ditched that in 2016. Obviously I am way too old for Tik Tok. Instagram seems popular, but I don’t really understand it. I know it probably does more now, but I still think of it as a picture-sharing place. But that still leaves Mastodon, Threads and Bluesky. A lot depends on where everybody else is going to. There is no point moving to network A if everybody that I might want to follow is on network B, so which one has more of the sort of people I like? The answer if probably Facebook or Insta, but I ruled them out, so I have decided to give Bluesky a go.

So I am now on Bluesky as @Skuds.bsky.social

When I find somebody I like to follow on Twitter is on Bluesky I follow them there and then unfollow them on Twitter. When I reach some sort of tipping point I will just turn of Twitter. Or maybe freeze it or something, or just stop using it.

Some accounts I follow are not on Bluesky (like RAF Luton and the World Bollard Association) which is a shame, but quite a lot are. It seems to be the place where most people are going, but if I end up not seeing what Nadine Shah, Raymond van Barneveld or Robert Rankin have to say, then I will live with that.

One small problem is that the plugin I use to cross-post from here to Twitter doesn’t do Bluesky. Yet. Maybe it will one day, or maybe I’ll have to get another plugin.
