New Phone Who Dis?

April 12th, 2026 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Technology · No Comments · Life, Technology

I may have noted how it feels like the more trivial a purchase is, the more time I spend agonising over it. In the last month I bought a car and a house. In both cases I got the first one I saw.

In contrast I have spent a month or so dithering about getting a new mobile phone.

My current phone still works but the USB socket is getting a bit unreliable. I put it on charge but then find that the cable has come loose and it hasn’t charged. I also have some issues with Bluetooth connections sometimes. Every time I decided to get a new one I put it off and decided I can live with it. This is a cheap (less than £200) phone that is three years old, so has been good value, considering it gets used every day, and I don’t feel too bad about replacing it. Obviously I can’t get my head round the mindset of needing the latest flagship £1000 phone and replacing it every year – which is part of how I could manage to save up for the house I suppose.

The real stimulus to actually getting a replacement was actually the prospect of having to drive. I have terrible trouble with getting lost so will be relying on Google Maps that will be displayed on the car’s screen. Unfortunately this relies on a wired connection and the slightest movement dislodges the USB cable from my phone.

I have even decided to go for something just a little more up-market. Nothing too extravagant, just moving up from the Moto G series to the Moto Edge series, but the extra RAM and storage will be handy. I’m sure there are other improvements. I just wish I could get excited by it all.
