The price of petrol

May 22nd, 2008 · 6 Comments · Life, Politics

I can understand the concern about the price of petrol, I can even understand why there is practically hysteria about it. What I can’t understand is why there is not similar outrage about the price of public transport and why there has not been general mass protests about that as well, or even instead.

Absolutely rental

February 5th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Politics

With all the shenanigans about dodgy donations, backhanders to invisible relatives and other ‘administrative errors’ I expected a steady stream of similar examples to be uncovered. I didn’t expect to see the whole expenses thing taken to a whole new level of piss-taking.

No taxation without representation

January 18th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Politics

Henry Smith is answering questions in the Crawley News this week. His answer to most questions is, as always, that everything is the government’s fault.

Inheritance tax

October 10th, 2007 · 8 Comments · Politics

I feel out of step with all this talk about inheritance tax. I have never seen it as a ‘tax on death’. That is just an emotive label pushed by the newspapers and Tories as far as I can see. If anything it is a windfall tax on the inheritors. As it happens I do […]

Question of the day

August 8th, 2007 · Comments Off on Question of the day · Politics

There has been a lot of attention given to Tom Cowie’s decision to stop donating money to the Tory party and to join the queue of Tory supporters, members and sympathisers who are lining up to stick the knife into David Cameron. I was more interested in the tail end of the story in the […]

Tories to increase benefits?

July 10th, 2007 · 4 Comments · Politics

I see that Call-Me-Dave Cameron is again flying a few kites with a variety of policy suggestions he is trying to link together as addressing ‘social breakdown’. A couple of weeks ago our street was visited by officers of the law who clamped several untaxed cars. One was released a few hours later after some negotiation about whether the bit of road it was on is actually public highway (a small part of our road is officially unadopted and the car was […]

Redistribution

March 23rd, 2007 · 13 Comments · Politics

I keep meaning to write something about redistribution, what with it being such a fundamental plank of left-wing ideology and all that, but never quite get round to it. I first felt the itch way back at the special council meeting to discuss council housing transfer, but you know how it is? If you don’t […]

Why I am happy with my council tax…

February 23rd, 2007 · 6 Comments · Politics

…well, sort of. As with all types of taxation, it depends on how you look at it. I am one of the fortunate people who does not actually get much back for my tax. Being gainfully employed and generously rewarded I am not in need of many of the services offered as safety nets. Some […]

Ugly Buildings. Again.

January 8th, 2007 · Comments Off on Ugly Buildings. Again. · Politics

There were two interesting articles in the papers today, which I will attempt to clumsily relate to each other. The first was Ashley Seager in the Guardian, arguing that we need a land tax to replace council tax and possibly allow reductions in VAT as well, and the second was in the Argus: a story […]
