Ethics of blogs for councillors

June 3rd, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

When I mentioned the council’s code of conduct, it got me thinking about how what is written in a blog could be subject to that.

If a councillor writes a blog, as more and more do now, I expect they have to be a bit careful not to be disrespectful to their colleagues, officers or members of the public. That’s fair enough.

On the other hand, I can say what I want subject to the normal rules of decency and libel which are nowhere near as strict. But what would happen if I decided to stand again and got elected? Obviously I would have to behave properly in future posts, but could I be held responsible for earlier ones written whilst just a member of the public? Would I have an obligation to delete or censor old posts? I don’t think I would fancy that.

The same applies to the contents of my web site. Would I need to examine that? Or am I just being too obsessive about standards?
