Heavy weather

July 30th, 2005 · Comments Off on Heavy weather · Life

With all the kids away at various places today, Jayne and I went down to the Hawth to visit the International Mela. It got a good bit of publicity yesterday on the BBC South-East news, but it wasn’t the same vibe as last year. Partly this is because we went without any children, but a […]

Surrounded by the Police

July 27th, 2005 · Comments Off on Surrounded by the Police · Life

Here is a little story from my youth. Sorry about the length. It does get topical by the end. Honest. I had arranged to meet an old college friend on the South Bank, outside the NFT. There was a bit of a cock-up over the time. I thought we were meeting at 6 and he […]

Full to the brim

July 27th, 2005 · Comments Off on Full to the brim · Music, Technology

Oh dear. My iRiver is finally full – there is only 3Mb of space left on the disk. If I want to get some more of my vinyl on there, or buy anything new, I will have to start deleting stuff, because my budget doesn’t stretch to getting a 40Gb model just yet. I already […]

Tube strike?

July 26th, 2005 · Comments Off on Tube strike? · Work

So the RMT want to ballot their members about taking strike action following the recent bomb attacks. What took them so long? I am a member of a transport union myself, and it is so hard trying to get new people to join when they see how the RMT on the Underground behave (admittedly the […]

Up on the roof

July 25th, 2005 · Comments Off on Up on the roof · Work

I shrunk the photo a bit to fit, so all the detail is not there, but it looks like our roof is home to either a tramp, a shoplifter, or a shoplifting tramp. Amongst all the rubbish I can see a mobile phone box, and a couple of those clear plastic security boxes that some […]

Inside the workplace

July 25th, 2005 · Comments Off on Inside the workplace · Work

The floor isn’t really wet. We just don’t have a sign that says “Carpet tile removed by the boss so he can take it home and see if its possible to clean it better than our cleaners do so he can put in a complaint about them.”

Safety First

We don’t talk about 2001… (Actually I can’t remember any accidents that year. We probably just lost the plaque, but why spoil a good caption?)

Outside the building (2)

July 25th, 2005 · Comments Off on Outside the building (2) · Work

Our own ‘twin towers’. I started working here in July 2001. Shortly after September 11th this view from the front door was quite unsettling, especially as we are near the flight paths for London City Airport. Looking up and seeing planes flying past two tower blocks had a certain resonance which still hasn’t quite gone […]

Outside the building (1)

July 25th, 2005 · Comments Off on Outside the building (1) · Work

This is our entertainment during smoking breaks. That road leads down to a sharp right turn under the railway bridge, which has concrete barriers around it. Despite all those signs we still get a remarkable number of buses, coaches and lorries who go straight down the hill and get wedged in.
