Black taxi drivers

July 20th, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Work · No Comments · Work

My workplace is opposite a mainline station in London, so we have black London taxis queueing outside and driving past all day. The other day I realised that, although the taxis are black, none of the drivers seem to be.

This week I started paying attention. Stand outside our building and there are always at least 20 taxis in view. There are between 10 and 20 a minute going past. And yet in three days I have seen only two black drivers.

Why is that?

And while we are at it, why do the normal rules of the road not apply to London taxis? They read books and the Daily Mail while they are driving, and also drink tea and eat. They queue on roundabouts so that buses can’t get round, do U-turns wherever they can, and generally act like they own the road.
