Tourism in London

August 9th, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Work · No Comments · Work

Today's lunchtime walk took us along the south bank of the river from County Hall to Gabriel's Wharf. Maybe it was not as crowded as it could be but there were still a lot of tourists around. A lot of the credit for that must go to the London Eye, but really that whole stretch of riverside had been totally regenerated in the last 15 years, with the Saatchi Gallery, London Aquarium, Dali exhibition at one end and the shops and restaurants of Gabriel's Wharf at the other.

And now the bit in the middle is being brought along too. The RFH is being totally gutted and transformed as a venue, but the frontage is now transformed with cafes, which have all opened in the last few weeks and are already proving to be extremely popular. It was not that long ago that most people would only to to the South Bank for specific events at the RFH or the NT but that has certainly changed now. Back in my mis-spent youth the South Bank was the place I went with my friends to get away from the crowds: now its firmly on the itinerary of any self-respecting tourist.
