Where will it end?

Now this new product is a prime example of the triumph of marketing over common sense – the Gillette 5-bladed razor.

When the Quattro was launched we joked about how ridiculous the idea was and speculated in a satirical vein about the logical next move of a 5-bladed razor, but even so we wouldn’t have suggested a 5-bladed razor with two lubricating strips (front and back), plus an extra single blade on the back for ‘trimming sideburns or under the nose’.

If these things ever reach our shores I can guarantee I will not be buying one. Lets just remind ourselves of what I managed to do with a mere 2 blades this week shall we? And ponder what damage I could have done with three times the total bladage available…

(Yes that is a different photo to the other day. Yes I did take several pictures – its a new camera! I had to try out different settings OK)

The thing is, I can remember when the double blade first came out. The adverts showed a cross section of the first blade cutting and pulling the stubble out so the second blade could ‘shave closer still’. Then the hair popped back in. There was nothing left for a third blade to shave, let alone a fifth. Either those early adverts were lying or Gillette have been adding redundant supernumary blades in increments of one for pure marketing reasons. My money is on both those choices together.
