World Leaders

In yesterday’s Guardian the centre-page spread was a photo of world leaders taken at the UN summit. Its a fascinating photograph. Although there were one or two who thought they ought to look serious and statesman-like, most were grinning, and a few looked like they were laughing out loud.

Underneath the photo there was a key so you could tell which was Ludwig Scotty of Nauru and which was King Mswati of Swaziland. The most striking aspect of this was that numbers 20 and 151 were ‘unidentified’.

Unless these two were passing chancers who decided to jump into the photo at the last minute – like the bloke who got into the Man United team photo for a prank, in which case they deserve much praise – they are world leaders but the UN couldn’t tell the papers who they were.

What must they be thinking when they open up the paper to see themselves alongside the other 158 world leaders and see that nobody knows who they are?  Its a shame, as number 20 really did look like he was enjoying himself.

Surely it would not have been too much trouble to get the list of countries invited, tick off the ones identified and do a quick search of the Internet to see what the presidents of the remaining couple of countries look like?
