Ron Greenwood deserved to be a lot more of a household name than he was. The fashionable thing to say is that he won the World Cup for England before he became manager, through his nurturing of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters at West Ham and it may be true.
What is beyond doubt is that without him there would have been no Trevor Brooking at West Ham, so us Hammers have a lot to thank him for.
