Another AGM

March 3rd, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

Its that time of year isn’t it?  Tonight was the AGM for the constituency party.  Last year there was nobody who really wanted to be chair of the party and there was a lot of arm-twisting to get someone to agree to be nominated.  By contrast we had four nominations this year and actually got to vote!

One of them was Jayne. I told her she was mad to even consider wanting to chair such a badly-behaved and ill-mannered rabble but she couldn’t be talked out of it. Even though I didn’t want her to do the job, for her own good, I still voted for her obviously.  Fortunately someone else drew the short straw.

To tell the truth, although I am mildly disillusioned by the national party and enthused by the possibilities in the Broadfield branch, I have really run out of patience with the party at the constituency level, especially the obsession with procedure.  The low point was probably when there were 8 nominations for the 7 positions of branch delegates to the Executive.  The discussion about whether to go to a vote and how to conduct it took far longer than the vote itself.

I came away greatly looking forward to removing all these elements from branch meetings and trying to make them actually fun and constructive.
