World Book Day

March 3rd, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

As several people have pointed out, today was world book day and I marked it by going into Crockatt & Powell to buy a book.

Actually I didn’t realise it was WBD at the time. I was just getting near the end of The Dice Man and wanted a replacement, so it was really a coincidence.

As part of my ongoing attempt to improve myself a bit, I fully intended to buy that Bertrand Russell book everyone (well, Neil and Andrew anyway) was talking about in the pub the other week, but it wasn’t in stock. Its on order for me now though.

I was tempted by the new Ismail Kadare, but didn’t want to spend so much on a book which is not only slim but has a large typeface and wide margins – wouldn’t last more than a train journey.  I’ll save that pleasure for another day. Maybe re-read The Concert first.

I was torn between Walden and The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropist, two books which I feel guilty about having never read, but noticed that the new Malcolm Gladwell book, Blink, is now out in paperback and got that instead.

Blink is all about the psychology of snap decisions, or so I am lead to believe. I’m almost afraid to start reading it in case I take an instant dislike to it and disappear in a puff of irony.
