New plugin for WordPress

April 7th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Technology · 6 Comments · Technology

I downloaded a new plugin for WordPress today, and so far it is looking pretty good in so far as it does what it is supposed to and has not broken anything. It will not have any impact when viewing the site, but certainly makes life a lot easier when adding or editing posts.

It is called Wysi-Wordpress and I got it from here.

All it does is add a few more buttons to the edit screen for when you are writing posts. The new buttons are:

  • Font colour
  • Background colour
  • Underline
  • Remove formatting
  • Full align justification
  • Insert image
  • Smileys
  • Dictionary
  • Cut/paste/copy

The only downside is that it removes the ‘more’ option and the ‘help’ option.

I know there is already an insert image button, but this plugin gives it more features, like being able to specify the size of the image displayed, with options for borders and margins.

I can’t say I am too bothered about adding smileys (they are a bit naff aren’t they?) but the two colour buttons are handy and extra options with images are cool. Being able to pull up a dictionary, thesaurus or encyclopedia entry for words might prove to be useful too.

Extra buttons for changing font sizes or typefaces would have been even better, but I’ll keep an eye out for updates in case they get added. As it stands its good enough though. I just have to resist the temptation to get carried away with it.

Just one warning for anyone who wants to try it – you have to make sure you turn off the option of RTF editor in your Users option page or you end up with two text editors at once and that is not a good thing.

UPDATE: Since I moved to Firefox I have had no trouble with this plugin. It was behaving a little strange with Internet Explorer though.

Thanks for the link and good luck in the elections. A schoolfriend of mine, Nick Hilton, who I haven’t seen for about twenty years used to be a Labour councillor in Crawley.(I hope it was Labour). I think he was councillor for Broadfield and then a county councillor. Is he still on the scene?

Also like the link for SpizzEnergi, that also brings back memories.

Do you use the WYSIWYG editor or the, erm, non-WYSIWYG editor?

I’m not sure I understand the question, but… ticking the RTF box gives you the built-in wysiwyg editor, the plug-in gives you an alternative wysiwyg editor. Activating the plug-in with the RTF box ticked gives you two, and neither work properly.
If you don’t use the split feature but might want to use different colours and want more image options then the plug-in is worth a go.

Having said that, the HTML window doesn’t seem to work very well so I might bin it anyway.

Nick is still around and still active in the party, though we can’t persuade him to stand anywhere again.

No you don’t – you just have lots of porn. Well done for having a spam comment which doesn’t look like a spam comment though.
