Were HMV being stupid or extremely clever?

I had some time to kill today, and killed it by browsing in HMV listening to the new Red Hot Chilli Peppers album which they were playing. (Sounds good. I might have to get it)

I was a little tempted by the Wolfmother album. I had not heard any of it, but it has had good reviews and they all say the same thing: that its old-school heavy metal which anyone who likes Black Sabbath and Deep Purple should enjoy. It was priced at £9.99, which is not too bad for a new CD.

While looking through the normal racks I saw a copy sitting there with a £7.99 price sticker on. I checked the back and the barcode sticker was also £7.99. That tipped the scales for me and I bought it.

The question is, did HMV cock up, or was it just a clever marketing ploy?  I have heard stories about record shops selling hard-to-shift albums by deliberately pricing them at a pound or two more than they want then leaving one at the 'real' price so it gets bought by people who think they are getting one up on the shop.

Anyway, I am listening to Wolfmother as I write this, and it is indeed bloody good. retro metal in the same way as the first Datsuns album was. Well worth £9.99 let alone £7.99

I did, however, manage to resist the Pantera Greatest Hits on the grounds that I must have most of the tracks already, as most people surely have, but with a DVD of videos included and all for six quid it was a close thing.
