Interview

September 4th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Work · 6 Comments · Work

I had an interview today.

Not one of those Labour Party selection interviews to have the honour and privilege of getting thrashed in a safe Tory seat again, but a proper job interview.

I keep applying for anything based in Crawley which is vaguely within my field and salary range, but such jobs don’t crop up very often. This one I am very excited about. Although it is an IT job there is no requirement for specific technical knowledge – so whatever knowledge I have accumulated is a bonus. Not that a passing acquaintance with ICL VME operations, 4GL databases and DRS 300 configuration counts for much these days anyway.

Because it was a job which I felt I could do well, with a company I want to work for, in a location where I want to work, I was more anxious than I would normally be in an interview, and maybe I got a bit carried away in my preparation. (I do not normally make a point of cutting my toe nails before an interview, but they were new shoes and I didn’t want to risk being uncomfortable in them)

Anyway, the interview lasted two hours, which is at least an hour longer than I expected. I hope that is a good sign. As far as I know there is only one other person in the running so my chances must be at least 50-50. The interviewer was the employing manager, and he seemed like a good person to work for, so thats just one more reason to really want this job.

The interview itself was all arranged over a week ago and I have had 10 days to obsess and worry about it. If I have to wait another 10 days for the verdict I will be a basket case by the end, but I have a feeling I will hear in a day or two whether I have bought my last Crawley to London season ticket. Until then I am keeping everything crossed.

Good luck! Someday I hope to be able to recycle my last London season ticket…

Good luck bruv. All those other commuters will miss your smiling face (ha, ha) – but will this mean you’ll have less time to read?

Andrew, I don’t think I will recycle my last season ticket but frame it to remind me of the thousands of hours and many more thousands of pounds which commuting has taken from me over the years.

I don’t think I will have less reading time though. I never read on the way into work as I snooze all the way. On the way home I usually read the G2 part of the guardian. Whenever I attempt a book on the train I drop off after a few pages.

No problem on ‘special’ journeys like visits to Reading or Doncaster but I can’t do it on the regular one.

4GL databases? You an ex-Application Master user?

I dabbled a little bit. Decision Support didn’t like us treading on their toes. Mostly I used Cubit the CAFS database, back in the good old days when a disk unit for 640Mb storage was the size of a washing machine.

CAFS. Content Addressible File System, if I recall. Didn’t use it a whole lot, but a nice bit of kit for some rapid file searching.
