There has been an abandoned chair outside our office for a few weeks now. It appeared one day in the middle of the roundabout,and then migrated to the pavement.
Today there was someone sitting in it.
She was there in the morning, and still there when we went out to lunch. When we returned from lunch she was still there. Sometimes she took a note or two and sometimes she took out a little DV camera and filmed the traffic.
When I saw her still there in the afternoon I cracked and asked her what it was all about.
It turns out that she is a student at the media studies place which operates from what used to be the Printers’ College at Elephant & Castle and this was an assignment. Everyone in her class was given a location and had to go there and spend 5 hours in the same place “soaking up the atmosphere” and observing.
I could not work out exactly what this was meant to achieve, and I’m not sure she was sure either. I am also a bit unsure of the wisdom of spending 5 hours “soaking up” the traffic fumes at a busy roundabout opposite a permanent queue of idling taxis.
I am now wondering whether last year’s strip tease was also some sort of coursework for this college. Maybe our humble office is a favourite location of theirs?
