Have I Got News for Crawley

November 3rd, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

I see that everyone was taking the piss out of Crawley on HIGNFY tonight. I had not realised that the story of our car park signs being hacked had reached national newspapers.

Apparently it was American hackers who were responsible for getting into the council’s car park computer and altering the message on the boards which are supposed to say how many spaces are available.

The hackers were probably very pleased with themselves, but here is a message for them – you were 8 days and a couple of hours away from making it into a really classic news story because this sign is on the route which the Queen took today when she visited the town today. There. I bet they are kicking themselves now.

I was up in London at the time so I don’t know if the signs were turned off as a precautionary measure.

I remember when I worked for London Underground and some senior people were visiting a station and were confronted by a passenger information sign which was giving out the vital travel information that “All signalmen are wankers”. That turned out to be a combination of leaving the computer unattended and a station assistant with a dislike of signalmen – but now LU is a lot more high-tech and have probably had the facility for American hackers to insert rude messages installed as a PFI project.
