Road safety

April 18th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

On Monday night at 10:30pm one the town’s few speed cameras was set on fire and destroyed. It is at a location where plenty of children cross to get to school. Nine-and-a-quarter hours later, on Tuesday morning, a 14-year-old girl was run over crossing the road on the way to school.

The two events are not connected.

The speed camera is in Bewbush and the girl was run over in Langley Green. The good news is that, although she was hit by a bus, she was not too badly hurt. Presumably the bus was not going too fast, perhaps just pulling away from a stop, or slowing down for one, or just going slow because Martyrs Avenue is a nightmare with cars parked everywhere.

The girl was, apparently talking on her mobile phone and therefore might not have been paying full attention. Not a good idea, but it happens. If it had happened near the Bewbush camera and she had been hit not by a slow-moving bus but by a car not forced to slow down by the camera, would the person who burnt it down be able to live with themselves?

The two events are not connected, but could so easily have been.
