BAFTA questions

May 21st, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 3 Comments · Life

I had half an eye on the BAFTA awards tonight, and it raised a couple of questions…

Did anyone really manage to watch Little Miss Jocelyn for more than 3 minutes? How can that be one of the four best comedy programmes?

Were Doctor Who and Torchwood ineligible or something? I don’t see how else their total absence can be explained.

Why no nominations for Tim Marlowe and his art programmes on Five? Or Tom Ang’s series on digital photography?

Is there no chance of creating a new category of “programme which is total bollocks but really enjoyable in spite of that” just for Primeval?

Is John Simm really that good? I thought so from seeing him in Life On Mars but for a top-drawer actor he made a real hash of pretending to be pleased for the people who beat him to Best Actor and Best Drama Series 🙂

How about next year’s BAFTAs having a ‘Most Embarrassing Appearance on a Chat Show’ category just for that dreadful woman who was on the Jonathan Ross show the other night? The secret of Ricky Gervais’s comedy is showing someone being a total knob but being unaware of how embarrassing they are, but I found myself cringing more through that interview than in an entire series of The Office!

Their total absence can be explained by the fact that the BAFTAs have notoriously been reluctant to nominate/reward Who (the other year being a ‘its-come-back-and-damn-them-has-reinvigorated-TV’ blip). And last year had excellent moments but overall lacks the public punch of S1. “Girl in the Fireplace” should have been nominated for something though.

    Tim Marlow
Dear God Yes. He definitely should have had a reward of some sort. He’s done more for art on TV than Schama I would argue.

ROTFLMAO!!! Ah bless you! have to agree that would be a perfect category!

    John Simm
I didn’t watch the awards myself, but it is interesting sometimes who just can’t help themselves in their response. They got the people’s vote which probably says a lot about LoM and formal awards ceremonies. Its genre TV, and like Who/Torchwood, was possibly not a significant runner against the gritty realism of the likes of Longford/The Street…

Apparently John Simm could be described as a bit of a mardy begger anyway. And as for ‘gritty realism’ LoM seemed to have a fair bit of that (admittedly my own memories of 1973 are those of a young child. Awards for Dr Who would be great but I’d never hear the last of it from my boss….

I thought Longford looked quite good from the clips shown. Jim Broadbent has really moved a long way from his National Theatre of Brent days.

It is being repeated tomorrow, so I will either watch it or record it on the new V+ box.
