Prescott’s still got it!

May 18th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Politics/Work · 8 Comments · Politics, Work

Our girl has been working in our MP's office this week for a work experience placement.  On Monday and Tuesday she was in the constituency office and yesterday and today she was in Portcullis House, and also had a bit of a tour of Parliament.

After her first day of commuting and all the strange new things she has seen, the only thing she can keep going on about is how much she likes John Prescott. Because he is funny.

Talking of Prescott what was it all about – the question that Laura asked him on China? It looked like a planted question to me which, if true, is sad in view of all the issues that directly effect (or affect) Crawley that could have been raised. :-((

It was about sustainable development. Am I to take it that Lib Dems don’t think that the implications of Chinese development are worth politicians thinking about?

I thought you guys were into the environment. Maybe not if you can score political points instead, though eh?

If MPs are only supposed to ask questions related directly to their constituency, then does that mean we can criticise you should you ever ask a question at Full Council which is not directly related to Northgate?

Of course, you are supposed to represent the whole town, and as a politician, consider the wider implications of the issues. If you do it at a Borough level, then you can’t have a go at an MP for doing it at a national level, or even for looking at a global view. Given that this was DPMQs, the subjects are limited to Prescott’s portfolio, anyway.

So I won’t be waiting for you to slip up, Gordon. Got better things to do.

Cool work experience though – hope she enjoyed it as much as Annie did hers! (She is now willing to consider University so she can be a drama teacher – better than wanting to be a ‘celebrity’ I think.

    Owen

You miss the point (deliberately?) which was that it looked sooooooooo like a planted question. I’ll give you (and Laura) the benefit of the doubt though. Point me to where Laura has made comment on Chinese development issues previously.

So, are you now saying that if a politician raises an issue that they haven’t before, that they are somehow wrong to?

Again, I could wait until you bring up something that you haven’t before, but it’s way too much bother just to expose a bit of minor hypocrisy 🙂

Laura has, however, been involved with discussions with local business leaders about the impact of China on our economy. It wouldn’t take much to go from those concerns to wondering whether China’s growth is sustainable and/or has other consequences…

Anyway, Johnny P is quite funny.

I still don’t know what the question was – more likely to be reading a good book than Hansard – but the Chinese economy is looking to expand hugely, and with it many more Chinese will be travelling to Europe for business and pleasure, and Chinese companies may be looking to expand into Europe and base themselves near international airports.

I can’t imagine that would affect Crawley at all, unless we had an international airport somewhere in the borough…

Jane – do kids always end up wanting to do whatever they do for their work experience?

Chas helped out in the severely disabled class at school and decided to do a college course in social care, Chrystal now fancies going on to study politics, but last year she did work experience with the army and was all for that.

I think they do try to place kids where they have expressed a preference. I guess the ones who don’t bother to express any preference get the choice of the nearest conveyor belt/supermarket or just hanging around the Job Centre for a week!
