Silversun Pickups

This evening I caught up with Friday's Later With Jools Holland, expecting to see The Who but they cancelled their appearance due to ill health.  Not to worry, there was plenty to keep me entertained.

The Kaiser Chiefs were OK, but a bit lukewarm, and the White Stripes were magnificent as always.  I think I could watch Meg White all day long – there is something fascinating about the way she plays – but the real treat was Silversun Pickups.

I had never heard of them before, but found them to be brilliant. The singer is scarily reminiscent of the serial killer in Dirty Harry, the bass player was a girl in a little black dress looking like she got kicked out of the Robert Palmer video because she can actually play,  the keyboard player was like one of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers sprawled across his instrument and the drummer was channelling Animal from the Muppet Show.

I suspect they are a band who are miles better live than on record but their performance on TV really stole the show, and I am sorely tempted to see if they can reproduce even a fraction of that energy on  CD.

A couple of weeks ago I watched Later and then went out to buy the Arctic Monkeys and CSS and previously I downloaded everything by the Gotan Project after seeing them on the show.  I am not sure if I can afford to keep watching this programme!
